KOESSEL STUDIOS GREEN ENERGY POLICIES
From the day our business began, we have always been energy efficient and waste conscious. In the beginning, we didn't think of it as being "Green". We just thought we were being thrifty and smart, but as it turned out, being green saves money, which is critical to the success of a business. Today those habits have become a big asset as the design community seeks to incorporate building products that are kind to the environment.
Some of the ways in which we practice "green habits:
** Our product is very green by nature, because we make our papers entirely by hand. All products are painted, sculpted embossed and embellished without the use of heavy machinery which saves energy consumption.
**All Koessel designs are created on a textured, non-woven substrate, which is made from an eco-friendly cellulose fiber and post consumer recycled materials. It is breathable, and more resistant to mold than traditional vinyl wallcoverings.
**Wallpaper is dried in the energy-efficient, old fashioned way: festooned on long-drying racks and allowed to dry by air.
**We use only water based, low V.O.C. inks which we re-mix and re-use to consume every last drop.
**We occupy a renovated former felt factory in a Chicago Enterprise Zone, which promotes the re-use of older buildings within the urban center of the city.
**We try to exchange products with other small businesses in our Enterprise Zone. For example, we collect our metal paint cans for a local silkscreen printer. We use the left-over fiber cores from a sewing operation in our drying racks. We donate our office copy paper to a women's non-profit organization that makes handmade paper cards & invitations. We recycle our kitchen aluminum, plastic, & newspaper. We also reuse our wallpaper and copy paper for packaging shipments.
**Our studio is naturally lit with over 100 feet of skylights
**Energy efficient windows and more insulation were installed in our factory in 2008.
** We use local suppliers whenever possible.
**All our employees live within 5 miles of our factory, enabling a short commute.
**Our company is an annual sponsor of Heifer International, a non-profit organization whose goal is to help end world hunger and poverty through self-reliance & sustainability.
